Disability insurance, in a round-a-bout way is a lot like workers’ compensation. Those who are faced with a long term or even short term disability understand the feeling of helplessness, feeling as though no one is there to help you and there’s nothing you can do.
Disability insurance helps provide a monthly income so that even those that physically or mentally can not work, have the means to either support or help support themselves. Disability benefits are obtained through two programs, either the Social Security disability insurance program or the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
To be considered for disability benefits, a doctor or specialist must first consider each patient and review their charts. If a doctor approves then the final steps are contacting Social Security. For those with long term disabilities, Medicare is given after a couple years of continued benefits.
